In one of the first acts of the 111th Congress, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers proposed legislation to create a blue-ribbon panel of outside experts to probe the "broad range" of policies pursued by the Bush administration "under claims of unreviewable war powers," including torture of detainees and warrantless wiretaps.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Why doesn't Conyers focus on the problems in the area he represents.  Schools in Detroit can't even afford to buy toilet paper because they can't manage their money properly.

Detroit schools are a local problem, a matter for the Detroit school board, not the Congress of the United States.  Hopefully, our congress will adress the problems in all of our schools eventually.

Looks to me like the Judicial Committe could follow up with investigation on about half of their area of responsibility #'s 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 16, 17, & 19.

Ryan -- in your copious spare time you may want to read the Constitution. School boards are a local issue and should (rightfully) be dealt with by local authorities. Something about those pesky "states rights" that conservatives whine about when they're not running the big show.

I agree that things such as educational issues should be handled first at a state level. That is why we have "state legislators and senators" to govern on a state level.  All school districts are having problems and have been for some time now.  My sons are 24 and 22, long past high school graduation.  I had to buy toilet tissue, Kleenex, hand sanitizer, hand soap, copy paper, etc.  for them to take to school since they were in middle school (6-8th graders).

And there is a local government in place to address it.

That's hilarious considering the Detroit Public Schools get federal money.  You can talk about the constitution all you want, but the fact is DPS gets money from the federal government, and Conyers is one of the Reps, and he has done nothing, even if it is lending a hand to the situation, or making more light of it.  Instead he is pursuing something that will amount to nothing, but a stage to do his grandstanding from.

Something about those pesky "states rights" that conservatives whine about when they're not running the big show.

That's funny, liberals talk about protecting constitutional rights, but are for programs like, the fairness doctrine, and the card check program.

Now here's a subject that needs to be discussed in detail and a panel that needs to be created.  The Bush admin needs to be thoroughly investigated for criminal wrong doing.

      Couldn't agree more.

To me this is, in part, a national security issue. If the rest of the world sees that we will proscute our own war criminals, that we'll bring to justice those who break the laws of our own country, then they may respect us more when we ask them to not treat their citizens with the same distain that GWB has treated the citizens of this country.

(p.s. How'd you format that cool list?)

If we don't we do not have the right to hold others accountable for their indiscretions.  No citizen in the USA is above the law. Period!!!!

Classy way to put it, you sound like a Democrat.

Blago is holding onto what he has, for financial purposes.  He has no hope of having a normal job in the future, so he has to play his cards right.
